The Battle

History & Significance

Bruces 1308 campaign in the north cleared the last major English garrisons from northern Scotland. After defeating the Comyns at Inverurie and the MacDougalls at Brander, he moved against Aberdeen — the principal English-held town in the north-east. The castle was captured and demolished. Aberdeen became a major centre of Bruce support and fundraising for the remainder of the war. Its liberation in 1308 secured Bruces northern flank as he turned south to complete the conquest of the Lowlands.
