History & Significance

During the First Barons' War, Prince Louis of France landed in England and quickly gained control of much of the south and east. East Anglian barons generally supported Louis against King John. Norwich, Ipswich and many Norfolk and Suffolk towns and castles changed hands. The death of King John and the regency government's victory at Lincoln and at sea off Sandwich ended the French presence in 1217.
