History & Significance

Mar established Perth as the Jacobite capital during the 1715 rising. A small government militia was dispersed as the Jacobite army occupied the town. Perth remained the Jacobite base for months — it was from Perth that Mar advanced to the indecisive battle of Sheriffmuir. After Sheriffmuir, the Old Pretender (James VIII) landed at Peterhead and came to Perth before the rising collapsed.
