History & Significance

Richard I's last significant military victory before his death. Philip II was caught in a vulnerable position and routed — he barely escaped when the bridge at Gisors collapsed under the weight of his fleeing knights, throwing Philip into the moat. Richard immediately began planning a major offensive that was cut short by an arrow at Châlus-Chabrol in 1199.
