History & Significance

After Prince Edward pursued the London Trained Bands from the battlefield, fighting continued in the streets of Lewes town as royalist forces tried to hold the castle and priory. Simon de Montfort's infantry fought through the town. Henry III took refuge in the priory, then surrendered. Prince Edward, returning to find the battle lost, surrendered too. The town fighting was fierce.
