History & Significance

Lord Loudon's government force, having retreated from Inverness, maintained itself in Easter Ross through the weeks before Culloden by conducting active operations against Jacobite sympathisers in the area. Strathpeffer — the spa valley in Ross-shire with its strongly Presbyterian population of Munros and Rosses — was a government stronghold. Loudon used it as a base. These Easter Ross operations kept a significant Jacobite-aligned force occupied in the north and prevented Jacobite consolidation of all the northern Highlands.
