The Battle

History & Significance

One of the most dramatic battles of the Anarchy — the civil war between Stephen and Matilda. Stephen's cavalry fled the field but he himself fought on foot until taken prisoner. His capture led to Matilda's brief triumph and her recognition as 'Lady of the English'. But her arrogance alienated London, which rose against her; the 'Rout of Winchester' later in 1141 reversed everything and Stephen was exchanged for the captured Robert of Gloucester. The battle changed everything — and then changed nothing.
