The Battle

History & Significance

The MacLeod lords of Lewis asserted control over the island in the late thirteenth century against rival MacSorley claims. Lewis had been part of the MacRuari territory and was contested between MacLeod and the MacSorley successors. MacLeod of Lewis maintained autonomy on the island well into the fourteenth century despite MacDonald pressure from the south.
