History & Significance

Henry I's siege of Bridgnorth was one of the most significant military operations of his reign. Robert de Belleme — described by Orderic Vitalis as the most cruel and wicked man in England — held vast Marcher lands including Bridgnorth, Shrewsbury, and Arundel. Henry's success here broke de Belleme's power completely. He was exiled and his immense estates forfeited to the Crown, permanently weakening the Norman baronage's ability to challenge royal authority in the Marches.
