The Battle

History & Significance

After the Cameronian regiment under Colonel Cleland held Dunkeld against 5,000 Highlanders in August 1689 — Cleland himself dying in the fighting — the Jacobite force fragmented. Government cavalry pursued dispersing Highlanders through Perthshire. These pursuit skirmishes in the days after Dunkeld effectively ended the military threat of the 1689 rising south of the Highland line. Only mopping-up remained. The Cameronians, famously the most disciplined and motivated of government regiments, had saved the government's position in Scotland.

Casualties & Losses

Jacobite stragglers killed or captured; Cameronians under Cleland suffered at Dunkeld itself
