History & Significance

William the Lion launched another campaign into the far north to assert authority over Caithness and its Norse-influenced population. Harald Maddadsson, the Earl of Orkney who also held Caithness, was a persistent source of trouble -- he had supported William's enemies and conducted his own semi-independent foreign policy. The 1201 campaign forced another submission. The ability of William to project military power into the extreme north was impressive for a medieval Scottish king.
