The Battle

History & Significance

The engagement at Slioch in December 1307 showed Bruces determination during his northern campaign. His forces were reportedly weak with illness — including Bruce himself. The Comyn-English force that confronted him at Slioch withdrew rather than press their advantage against a sick and weakened enemy. Whether from reluctance to fight or genuine fear, the withdrawal was a strategic gift to Bruce. His apparently miraculous recovery and the subsequent victory at Inverurie the following year cemented his reputation for indestructibility.
