History & Significance

John MacDougall of Lorn ambushed the newly crowned King Robert Bruce at Dalrigh near Tyndrum with a force of 1,000 men while Bruce had only 600. Bruce was cut off from his supporters and nearly captured. In the fighting his cloak was seized along with the Brooch of Lorn. Bruce escaped into the west but his cause appeared lost. The brooch is still in MacDougall possession.
