History & Significance

Following the Bryn Glas victory in 1402, Welsh forces swept through Monmouthshire attacking English settlements. Newport, a significant English port on the Usk estuary, was attacked and burned. The town's destruction demonstrated the vulnerability of English communities in south-east Wales and showed the geographic reach of the rebellion. Newport Castle itself held but the surrounding community suffered serious damage.
