History & Significance

The Battle of Byland demonstrated Scottish military superiority under Robert the Bruce and severely damaged English prestige in the North. The subsequent Great Raid of 1322 allowed the Scots to penetrate deep into northern England, devastating communities and enriching themselves through plunder, which strengthened Bruce's position domestically and forced England to recognize Scottish independence through the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton in 1328.
