The Battle

History & Significance

Following the catastrophic English defeat at Stirling Bridge, the English garrison in Stirling Castle — commanded by Cressinghams subordinates — lost the will to hold on. The castle was surrendered or abandoned in the immediate aftermath of the battle. Wallace occupied Stirling and held it briefly as base for his administration as Guardian of Scotland. This was the first Scottish recovery of Stirling — which would change hands several more times before Bannockburn resolved the issue.
