The Battle

History & Significance

As part of the 1715 Jacobite strategy, Mar ordered the burning of Auchterarder, Crieff, and other Perthshire towns to deny them as winter quarters to the Duke of Argyll's government army. The scorched-earth policy was controversial and alienated potential supporters. The burning of loyal towns for military purposes was remembered long afterward.
