History & Significance

Simon de Montfort — who had called the first English Parliament including commoners — was trapped in a bend of the River Avon and destroyed. His body was mutilated; his head, hands, and feet were sent as trophies to Royalist supporters. Despite his death, the parliamentary precedent he established became permanent. Evesham is where Parliament was born in blood.
