History & Significance

John Gordon of Glenbuchat, now in his seventies, was one of the most dedicated Jacobites of the '45. His appearance — gaunt and weather-beaten, riding through the camps — reportedly gave rise to the story that Cumberland told George II 'the devil Glenbuggit' was coming, causing the King to mistake the name for a monstrous figure. Glenbuchat raised his Strathdon men for a third time, having served in 1715 and 1719. In 1746 he commanded the Jacobite siege force at Fort William. After Culloden he escaped to France and died in exile. His total loyalty across thirty years of Jacobite service was remarkable.
