In 1311 Scottish forces burned Hexham, the important ecclesiastical town on the Tyne, as part of the wider campaign against Northumberland. Hexham Priory, already sacked in 1297 by Wallace, suffered again as raiders sought ransom from the priory's accumulated wealth. The 1311 Hexham raid was one of the most significant early demonstrations of Bruce's post-Bannockburn ability to operate deep into England, predating the main period of raids.
