The Battle

History & Significance

Henry Tudor's court in exile at Rennes in Brittany grew significantly after the failed 1483 rebellion as hundreds of English gentry and nobles fled to join him. At Rennes Cathedral on Christmas Day 1483 Henry swore an oath to marry Elizabeth of York, uniting the Lancastrian and Yorkist claims. This political masterstroke attracted widespread English support.
