In the 1715 rising, Dundee was seized by Jacobite forces as part of Mar's consolidation of eastern Scotland. The town's port gave the Jacobites access to the sea for supplies and communications. Government-sympathising Presbyterian merchants and townspeople were suppressed or fled. The seizure of Dundee, combined with Aberdeen, gave the Jacobites control of the main east-coast ports from the Tay northward. This coastal control was essential for receiving the arms and men that arrived from France and for maintaining the logistical coherence of Mar's large army.
