History & Significance

Henry I negotiated with Scotland from the basis of strength established by the killing of Malcolm III at Alnwick in 1093 and the subsequent Scottish succession crisis. The Treaty of 1107 with Edgar of Scotland and later arrangements with Alexander I defined the Anglo-Scottish border relationship for a generation, building on the military precedent set at Alnwick. Henry's cultivation of Scottish royal friendship, including marrying his daughter Maud to David who would become David I, shaped the border politics of the entire twelfth century.
