The Battle

History & Significance

Patrick Sarsfield led c.500 cavalry on a daring night raid, slipping through Williamite lines, to intercept their siege train at Ballyneety. Using the password "Sarsfield" — which Williamite spies had inadvertently revealed — he surprised the camp and destroyed the artillery, mortars and supplies. The raid made Sarsfield a legend and saved Limerick.
