Dumbarton Castle -- the ancient stronghold on its great volcanic rock at the mouth of the Clyde -- was one of the strategic prizes that had to be secured by the Guardians in the immediate aftermath of Alexander III's death. Control of Dumbarton controlled access to the western approaches. The Guardians moved quickly to place loyal garrisons in all major castles, preventing any claimant faction from using a fortress as a power base in the chaotic opening of the Interregnum.
Scottish Guardians: c.500–800; attackers: c.400–600
