History & Significance

Bristol Castle was the primary imperialist fortress of the Anarchy, held throughout the civil war by Robert of Gloucester for the Empress Matilda. Stephen besieged it early in the conflict but the castle was too strong and Bristol too well supplied from the sea for a conventional siege to succeed. The failed siege illustrated Stephen s inability to eliminate the imperialist heartland in the southwest and prolonged the civil war.
