History & Significance

Viscount Dundee led his growing Highland army through Strathtay in the weeks before Killiecrankie, gathering clans and securing the passes of Highland Perthshire against government interception. The valley of the Tay above Aberfeldy was his route east to Killiecrankie. Government sympathisers in the valley were subdued and local Jacobite adherents among the Murrays of Atholl and allied families provided guides, supplies and intelligence. Minor confrontations occurred as Dundee's cavalry screened his advance against government scouts.
