History & Significance

After the MacGregor proscription, Campbell forces under the Earl of Argyll swept through Glen Strae in Argyll — the heartland of the MacGregor of Glenstrae's territory. Alasdair MacGregor was hunted through his own country. The sweep was part of a systematic programme of suppression authorised by James VI. Campbell tenantry replaced MacGregor communities in Glen Strae, with some MacGregors hiding in the hills and continuing resistance for years. The Glen Strae operations were among the first phases of what became a decade-long systematic destruction of the MacGregor clan.
