The Battle

History & Significance

The extraordinary spectacle of a king defeated in battle by his eldest son. Robert Curthose had rebelled against his father after a quarrel and found refuge with the French king Philip I at Gerberoi. In the skirmish William I was unhorsed and wounded — his horse killed beneath him. Robert unhorsed him personally but then recognised his father and let him go. The family rift shaped the succession crisis after 1087.
