History & Significance

During the rebellion of 1088 against William Rufus, Bishop Odo of Bayeux (the Conqueror's half-brother) held Pevensey Castle. William Rufus besieged it from land and sea. The garrison eventually surrendered and Odo was exiled. The siege confirmed Rufus's hold on his kingdom against the baronial faction.
