History & Significance

John most brilliant military action. Eleanor of Aquitaine was besieged by her grandson Arthur of Brittany at Mirebeau. John marched over 80 miles in 48 hours and attacked the surprised besiegers at dawn, capturing Arthur and over 200 French barons. The victory was squandered by John brutal treatment of his prisoners, turning Philip II allies against him permanently.
