History & Significance

Robert Wishart, Bishop of Glasgow, was one of the principal Scottish leaders who supported William Wallace's revolt in 1297. He provided absolution and spiritual legitimacy to the Scottish rebellion, acting in direct defiance of Edward I. When captured by Edward I he was held in chains. His episcopal role in sustaining Scottish resistance illustrates the same church-crown tension that marked English domestic politics throughout this period.
