History & Significance

The Gordon Earls of Huntly extended their power systematically northward through Aberdeenshire and into Ross-shire throughout the fifteenth century. Skirmishes with the Earls of Ross — already weakened by the forfeiture of 1476 — were part of this expansion. Gordon power in the north became so great that they were effectively viceroys of the crown in the area beyond Grampian.
