The Battle

History & Significance

The 1322 campaign was the deepest Scottish penetration into England during the Wars of Independence. While the main Scottish army advanced toward Byland, secondary forces swept through Westmorland, burning towns and extracting tribute. The devastation was so complete that the county was effectively depopulated in parts for years afterward. The raids coincided with the great famine years, amplifying their destructive effect on northern English society.
