History & Significance

Simon de Montfort and baronial forces seized Gloucester to secure the Severn crossing and prevent royalists in the west from linking with the main royal army. The city was taken and garrisoned. This gave the barons a strategic advantage in controlling movement across the Severn which would later prove decisive in the campaign leading to Evesham when the same control worked against de Montfort.
