The Battle

History & Significance

Perth was a major English-held town and the key to controlling central Scotland. Bruce personally reconnoitred the walls disguised as a pilgrim, then led the night attack himself. He is said to have been one of the first up the ladder. The recovery of Perth in January 1313 was part of Bruce's systematic reduction of English-held positions and demonstrated his willingness to take personal risks that inspired his men.
