History & Significance

In 1228 a combined MacWilliam and MacHeth revolt broke out in the north. The MacHeth line, descended from the mormaers of Moray through the Macbeth connection, allied with the MacWilliams in what was probably the last serious attempt to replace the Canmore dynasty. Alexander II crushed the rising with characteristic efficiency. The two rival claimant lines had been a persistent dynastic threat for nearly two centuries.
