History & Significance

During the Guardianship period following Alexander III's death, maintaining control of major Scottish castles was an essential task of the six Guardians. Dundee and the other Tay-side fortresses were particularly important as they controlled the eastern lowlands. The Guardians worked to prevent any faction from using a castle as a base for seizing the throne unilaterally before the succession was formally determined by the Great Cause process.
