History & Significance

Fauconberg's fleet bombarded London Bridge while his Kentish troops attacked from the Southwark bridgehead on 14 May 1471. The Southwark suburb was fired to force the defenders to open the gates but the city held. The fleet's cannon fire damaged buildings but failed to break the bridge defences.
