Montacute in Somerset was the site of one of the earliest Norman castle constructions in the south-west, built by William I's forces to dominate the surrounding territory. Local English resistance to the castle's construction and garrisoning in 1069 was suppressed by a Norman force sent from Winchester. Montacute later gave its name to the family of de Montacute and became a significant Marcher lordship in the development of Norman Somerset.
