History & Significance

One of the rising's most extraordinary episodes. Lord Loudoun sent 1,500 men to capture Prince Charles sleeping at Moy Hall. A blacksmith named Donald Fraser and four companions intercepted them in the dark, shouted orders as if commanding a large army, and fired their guns. Loudoun's force panicked and fled — 1,500 men routed by five. The incident was immediately called "The Rout of Moy".
