The Battle

History & Significance

Odiham Castle in Hampshire was besieged by Louis of France's forces. The garrison of only thirteen men held out for three weeks against a major French force, a remarkable resistance. When they eventually surrendered they were honourably treated on account of their valiant defence. The siege illustrated both the determined royalist resistance and the relative weakness of the French strategic position despite their widespread territorial gains.
