Uspak, a Hebridean Norse lord, seized the kingship of the Isles briefly in 1230 during the struggle between Olaf and Reginald of Man. He was recognised by some Hebridean lords and gathered a fleet but died in battle at Rothesay attempting to consolidate his position. His brief kingship illustrates the fragmented nature of political authority in the Hebrides and the opportunities for minor lords to seize power during succession crises.
