History & Significance

Wallaces guerrilla phase from 1299 to 1305 is less celebrated than his earlier victories but equally important. After resigning the Guardianship he continued the fight from forest bases. English records show bounties posted for his capture and regular expeditions to flush him out — all of which failed. He may have spent time in France negotiating with Philip IV. He remained a symbol of resistance even while John Comyn and others nominally led the Scottish cause. His eventual capture in 1305 was through betrayal, not military defeat.
