History & Significance

After Tewkesbury Richard Duke of Gloucester was granted the Warwick-Neville estates and established himself at Middleham in Yorkshire, building an extensive northern affinity that controlled the region for Edward IV. His governance of the north through the Council of the North represented the most effective Yorkist administration of northern England.
