The Battle

History & Significance

After Evesham, Simon de Montfort's followers (the "Disinherited") held Kenilworth Castle for nearly a year and a half against the royal army. Henry III used a specially constructed navy on the surrounding mere. The garrison held out until starvation and disease forced surrender. The Dictum of Kenilworth (October 1266) that settled terms helped reconcile the rebel faction.
