Fotheringhay Castle was besieged by the regent's government in 1221 as part of the reassertion of royal control over castellans who had held castles during the civil war. The castle was held by William de Forz who refused to submit. The siege demonstrated that the regent was willing to use force against English magnates who defied royal authority even after peace was restored.
