Five days before Stamford Bridge, the northern earls Edwin and Morcar met Harald Hardrada's massive Norwegian army south of York. The English were positioned between the River Ouse and marshy ground but were outflanked and routed, many drowning in the marshes. The defeat opened York to Harald and compelled Harold Godwinson to march north at extraordinary speed — which then left him exhausted for Hastings.
