History & Significance

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle's account of the battle of Aegelesthrep, identified with Aylesford on the Medway, records that both Horsa and Catigern were killed. Hengist continued as king of the nascent kingdom of Kent. The battle was part of the Jutish revolt against British overlordship that established Kent as the first Anglo-Saxon kingdom. Horsa's burial mound was said to be at Horsted in Kent.
