History & Significance

In the manoeuvring that preceded and followed the Battle of Falkirk Muir, the town of Linlithgow — midway between Edinburgh and Stirling — was repeatedly contested. Government cavalry and Jacobite horsemen skirmished at Linlithgow Bridge. The town contains Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. These skirmishes formed part of the wider military operations in the Forth valley during January–February 1746.
